Interview with Colette from It's Always Summer | Part 2: Organic Airbrush Tanning

Hi Everyone! Here's Part 2 of the two part interview with Colette from It's Always Summer!

Since the weather has cooled down substantially, it's a bit harder to catch some sun rays- especially for a nice tan. The holidays are coming up and I know a few of you (if not, many!) would love an alternative to baking in the sun. We all know that spending hours in the sun is not the best for your skin, so Colette answered a few questions regarding Organic Spray Tanning.

How Does Airbrush Tanning work?
The active ingredient in all spray tan solution is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that darkens the skin through staining. DHA reacts with the amino acids (keratin proteins) in the outermost layer of your skin. As these dead skin cells naturally wear off, the color gradually fades, just like a genuine sun tan.

The solution I use also includes a bronzer which allows me to see where the solution has been placed and make sure that you are covered evenly.  This bronzer will rinse off when you shower.

How Long Does The Airbrushing Process Take?
The process takes about 20 minutes, sometimes longer if we get to chatting. This includes a brief discussion of what to expect, the do’s and don’ts after you leave, prep time, the spray itself, and also dry time.

How Long Does The Tan Last?
Your airbrush tan will last between five and twelve days depending on how you prep and care for your skin afterwards.  If you exfoliate really well before your tan as well as moisturize really well after your tan, you tan will last longer. Taking long hot baths or showers, prolonged exposure to chlorine, and waxing or shaving, will speed up the exfoliation process and shorten the life of your tan.

What Do I Wear For My Airbrush Tanning Session?
For women, you may wear as much as you or nothing at all.  Most women opt to wear some sort of bottom and go topless but it is totally up to what you feel comfortable in. I have disposable G-string underwear that I am happy to give you to wear during your session.  If you are a man, I require that you wear something such as a bathing suit, underwear or Speedo.

Is Airbrush Tanning Safe?
The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), was approved by the FDA in 1973. DHA is derived from raw sugar cane and is the only active ingredient approved by the FDA for sunless tanning products. DHA has been used safely over the years in numerous sunless tanning products, such as creams and lotions.

Before and After Prep Sheet
Preparing your skin for your airbrush tan is very important, and can mean a difference between a good and a bad spray tan. The longevity of a sunless tan depends on the tanning product that is used, the skin's natural exfoliation process, and on the skincare regimen followed before and after application. Here are some tips to help your tan last and look it’s best.

Exfoliate, Shower, and Wax/Shave.
Exfoliate your skin before getting the tan. This can be done with a loofah sponge or an exfoliating body scrub. The spray tanning solution affects only dead skin cells. Your skin has a build-up of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the sooner it will rub off. If you exfoliate, the layer will be very shallow, and it will take a while for it to “build up”, and your tan will last longer.

Do not wear any lotions, deodorant, moisturizer or makeup.
These can all act as a barrier to the tanning solution and can result in a tan that is spotted, splotchy, or uneven.

Wear something that is dark and loose
Some of the solution will rub off onto your clothing, sheets, etc., but don’t worry, it is not permanent and will wash out. Just please don’t wear or sleep in anything that if it got a spot on it, you would be upset.  Wearing tight clothing such as jeans, a tight shirt, socks, etc. immediately after can wipe the solution off before it can set in.

Do not sweat, swim, shower, bathe, etc. for at least 8 hours after getting the tan.
The solution needs at least 8 hours to set in the skin. Once you do shower, feel free to use a soft washcloth to lightly rub off excess solution. The color you may see washing off is NOT your tan, it is simply the bronzer color added to the solution.

Limit shaving, exfoliating, etc. as much as possible.
Shaving over the spray tan can shorten the life of the tan by days because it can remove part of the top layer of skin. Please shave before your appointment.

Your tan will last longer on moisturized skin, however, do not apply moisturizer until after you shower. High quality lotion is recommended, but many over-the-counter lotions will work just as well.  I sell a great lotion that is made by the same company that I get my solution from and it also has a little bit of DHA in it which will help your tan last even longer.  Let me know if you would like a sample!

Use SPF!
Your airbrush tan will NOT protect you from the sun so please remember to wear your sunscreen.
